Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Marchena 2024

On Saturday, November 30, 2024, the Virgin of the Miraculous Medal processed through the streets from her recently restored Chapel of the Miraculous Medal. For two years, the chapel underwent extensive renovations due to an insect infestation that had severely damaged the roof beams, which were on the verge of collapse. The restoration was carried out by the town council, and during this period, the Association of the Miraculous Medal was hosted at the Church of Santa Clara. As a gesture of gratitude, the procession made an emotional visit to that church this Saturday. The procession also stopped by the two seniors’ residences, as it does every year. Accompanying the procession with its melodies was the María Santísima de la Palma Cornet and Drum Band from Marchena.

Our Lady of Grace of the Miraculous Medal traces her origins to Paris, France, where she appeared to Catherine Labouré in 1830 at the convent of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, located at 140 rue de Bac. The Virgin instructed Catherine to create the Medal of the Immaculate Conception, later known as the Miraculous Medal due to the many miracles attributed to it.

The Chapel of the Miraculous Medal in Marchena was originally built in the 16th century as a hermitage dedicated to Our Lady of Grace. In 1836, it was taken over and transformed into a hospital by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. The Association of the Miraculous Medal in Marchena was founded in 1922 and has since been housed in the current chapel, which is owned by the town council.

This procession usually takes place on December 8, the day of the Immaculate Conception, the national patron saint of Spain. But this year it coincided with the Magna in Seville, so it has been brought forward.
